VFW Post 3629 Announces Selection of 2017 National Patriot's Pen Contest Winners

Karen Lundquist - 6/19/2017

Each year, more than 120,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC for the winner and a parent or guardian.  The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine American history, along with their own personal experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. The 2017-18 theme is "America’s Gift to My Generation.” Student entry deadline is October 31, 2017. Contest rules, eligibility and entry forms can be downloaded at www.vfw.org Submissions can be delivered to the local VFW Post.
